436: Get More Done Faster by Improving Your Working Memory

CUSTOM JAVASCRIPT / HTML

Do you often find yourself asking people to repeat what they just told you ‘cuz you simply forgot?

When people give you a list or phone number do you need them to give it you one by one as you write it down or else you find yourself forgetting and asking them to repeat it?

Do things take longer then you like because you always have to go back to check because you don’t remember anymore?

I feel you. I’ve struggled with working memory for the longest time.
And I’d like to share with you the exercise to solve this issue.

Working Memory

Working memory is memory needed to do a task.
If you are making macaroni you don’t need to remember the macaroni needs to cook in the pot for 9 minutes once you are enjoying the food.
You only need to remember 9 minutes while you are doing the task of making the macaroni.

My experience with working memory

Personally, I struggled with working memory for the longest time.

And I tried everything - all the games, all the exercises, the digital, the printouts, everything. Nothing helped.

Every time someone gave me a phone number I would ask them about 12 times because they’d say the whole number (even 3 of the numbers) but I’d only get the first number and then would get confused and have to ask them to repeat it again and again.

Even my mom knew, if she was giving me more than 1 thing to do, she’d want me to write it down ‘cuz otherwise I’d forget.
When you’ve got strong working memory you don’t have to go over things 600 times. You remember it the first time without having to waste time going over it again or having to ask people to repeat what they just said.

Finally, I came up with this exercise I’m about to share with you and it changed everything.

A Warning About This Exercise

Just a quick heads up, this exercise is not particularly a fun exercise.
I found it easiest to do with other people. So, if you have a friend who struggles with working memory also, block out 15 minutes a day for the next 3 weeks so you can do it together.

The Working Memory Exercise That Drastically Helped

Grab a pen, paper and phone. Let's do the exercise that finally helped me improve my working memory.

  • Draw 6 square frames labeled 1-6.
  • In each frame draw shapes. Start off with a few simple shapes, as the frames go on, make the shapes more complex.
  • Use your phone to record what you just drew. Simply read out exactly what you see. Example, "In frame 1, There is a square in the top right corner and a triangle in the bottom left corner. In frame 2..."
  • On a clean sheet of paper, draw new 6 square frames labeled 1-6.
  • Play your recording one frame at a time & draw exactly what it says. Press pause after each frame and draw what the recording told you to do. Do not replay the recording, simply draw it to the best of your ability.
  • Once you are done drawing all 6 frames, compare your 2 papers. If there are ANY mistakes, take a new piece of paper and go back to step 4. If they are exactly the same (every shape is the same, the location is the same, etc.) repeat the process only this time add more shapes into each frame.

Your Challenge

Your challenge this week is a big one.
Block out 15 minutes on your calendar for the next 3 weeks to do this exercise.
Yes, it will be challenging, yes you can do it.

Cheers to Peak Brain Performance and amazing working memory!
