What can you do when you’re amygdala is hijacking your brain?
The part of your brain that’s in charge of strong emotions is called the amygdala
The amygdala is two small, almond-sized sections in your brain that sit in the low part behind your ears.
The amygdala communicates with the prefrontal cortex, the logical thinking part of your brain.
Most of the time, the prefrontal cortex is in charge, running the show and thinking logically.
Sometimes though, the amygdala hijacks the brain so there is a literal disconnect between the amygdala and prefrontal cortex.
If this happens, there is NO point in trying to think logically or trying to calm someone down with logic as the logic brain has been hijacked.
What you need to do first is get the logic brain in charge again.
Then and only then can one start thinking logically.
So how do you calm the brain down and get the logic brain in charge again?
Any of the calm techniques you know may help. Find the one you like best.
Here are some suggestions:
I suggest you have a technique you use over and over again - ‘cuz remember when your amaygdala has hijacked you, your brain is not thinking logically and will struggle to come up with ways to calm down. A go to option will start becoming default.
You want to remember this info when you are trying to talk to someone else you know has an amygdala hijack.
If your 2 year old has a complete meltdown, trying to talk them logically out of it is not going to help them calm down. Rather hold them close to your heart and do deep breaths with them.
Your challenge this week is to pick a calm down option that you’ll use whenever your amygdala hijacks.
Yes, in the beginning your brain will need remembering and it will take more work for you to be able to do it.
Best if you can tell your close people what you are trying to do and ask of they can remind you when they see you going into that state.
It will take work, but you’ve got this!
