By the time Brian joined Optimize Your Brain, he already had one big exit from a company and was onto building his next.
Yet, every time something “bad” would happen, everything would fall apart – concentration, motivation, and possibilities would go out the window.
All work would just go on hold for a couple of hours (or days!) and then he’d only feel guilty that he wasted the time.
A deeper understanding of his brain and a small switch later, he had an easy time bouncing back after a challenge.
While you are doing any task, you (without even realizing it!) are using your 28 thinking skills.
When the thinking skills you need to use are strong, doing the task is easy.
If the thinking skill you need to use is weak, doing the task will be a challenge.
The struggle that Brian had, came from a disconnect between his amygdala and thinking skills.
Most of the time, the part of your brain called the prefrontal cortex, is in charge.
This is the logical thinking brain.
The prefrontal cortex is in constant contact with your amygdala, the part of your brain that stores high emotions.
Sometimes, you can get an amygdala hijack.
That’s when there’s so much emotion, that your amygdala hijacks the logical, thinking brain and there is no connection between the prefrontal cortex and amygdala.
When Brian shared with me he was going through this challenge, he said, “I think it’s related to reducing procrastination.”
Uhm… no.
It’s actually about helping your prefrontal cortex get in charge of your brain again.
Because as long as your amygdala is in charge, anything logical you say will not work.
If you feel like your productivity goes down as you get in your head after something goes wrong, someone says a mean comment, things are just going “bad” you'll want to help yourself get back on track by getting your logical, thinking brain to be in charge again.
Anything to help you calm down will help get your prefrontal cortex in charge again.
Here are some suggestions:
To get really quick results, you'll want to pick ONE technique and stick with it every time so your brain uses it as a trigger to calm down.
When your amygdala is in charge you’re not able to think properly so if you have a “go-to” technique you'll do it faster and find yourself bouncing back within moments.
Just to clarify, this is not about suppressing the emotions, actually, you're doing the opposite, you're creating space to let the emotion pass easily so that way it's no longer in the way.
If you find yourself getting off track anytime something “bad” happens is because your emotional part of your brain took charge.
You want to help your logical brain get in charge again by using some sort of technique
Your challenge this week is to choose a technique you'll use in every time your amygdala hijacks your brain.
It will be challenging in the beginning to remember to do it but the more you do it the easier it will become.
