Emma prided herself on professionalism and punctuality.
However, every time she arrived at a meeting, she felt an internal rush, even though she physically made it on time.
It always took a few moments to get oriented and she’d feel unsettled the entire meeting
During one Optimize Your Brain session, something clicked, and she changed the way she approached it all.
While you are doing any task, you (without even realizing it!) are using your 28 thinking skills.
When the thinking skills you need to use are strong, doing the task is easy.
If the thinking skill you need to use is weak, doing the task will be a challenge.
The struggle that Emma had, came from a weak thinking skill of understanding reality.
While it may seem like Emma struggled with the thinking skill of time, her challenge actually came from understanding reality.
You see, it's not that see didn't know how much time a task would take, what she struggled with was understanding the effects of activities.
Understanding reality is about understanding cause and effect; what happens if?
Emma wasn't bad at understanding reality.
She knew certain actions create results.
It was about taking it to the next level.
When I come from task type X I'm in X type state-of-mind and I need to adjust to Y type state of mind.
Through mediation (specific types of questions) Emma came up with the following strategy that ended up saving her time and created lots of peace of mind.
Come to the appointment/meeting a few minutes early and then use that bonus time to answer phone messages.
Why this worked: Emma understood she needed time to adjust before the meeting/appointment and because answering messages on her phone tended to be a less draining task, she can do it during the transition time.
This helped her come into the meetings clear-headed and be more productive.
Plus, she didn't waste prime mental time answering messages as she KNEW she had time to answer them in her bonus time.
This may be a great transition strategy for you too, but I don't want you to get caught up in it as it may not work for you, I want you to develop your understanding of reality and then come up with something that works for you.
Take a day to look at results of your actions.
How do I feel after this task?
Energized? Drained?
Where are the glitches happening? What is causing them?
What are slight changes can I do to make it easier?
Based on the info you collect (YOUR reality) you can come up with a strategy that works for you!
When you understand how your brain and body reacts to different tasks and activities you can be proactive.
Your challenge this week is take a day to understand your reality.
Think about or even journal these questions:
