What to Do When You are Procrastinating

CUSTOM JAVASCRIPT / HTML

You don’t procrastinate eating a piece of chocolate or checking your phone.
You procrastinate on things you don’t want to do, but why?
And how can you change it?

Real Life Challenge

Imagine you have a blog post you need to write, but you find writing really hard and mentally draining.
You're just pushing it off and the thought of the blog post just hangs in the back of your head all week long.

Why You're Procrastinating

2 Reasons you might be procrastinating: (Because there’s a reason! You’re not just lazy.)

1. Motivation - If you don’t see the benefits or the payoffs aren’t worth it, you're not going to do it.

2. Cognitive Deficiency - The way your brain is currently wired, makes it very hard to do this task.
It doesn’t mean you can’t rewire your brain to make it easier, but meanwhile you need strategies to get the work done.

And it can be both!
Many times, cognitive deficiencies, our brain’s weaknesses play into motivation.

Is it a MUST?

First, you’ve got to understand WHY you need to do the task?
Can you skip it?
If you, do it, what benefit will you get?

Many times, we do task simply because we were always doing it. Maybe now you don’t have to do it anymore.

If it has to get can done - can you delegate, it?
Is there a team member or friend that can help you?

If you’re the one that has to do, how can you stop procrastinating and get it done?

How to Stop Procrastinating

We now know it has to get done and benefit of doing it, so we have the motivation.
But it’s still a challenge, so we need to make it as easy as possible.

Here a few ways to help you get started:

1. Do the task when your brain has the most mental energy. For me that’s early morning. What’s it for you?

2. Set a time to do the task and when that time comes, don’t negotiate with yourself. Do it.
You already spent time planning when you’ll do it you don’t need to waste more time negotiating with yourself.

3. Find a way to make it exciting.
Can you do it in Starbucks?
Put on classical music in the background?
Do you want to get dress up for it?
How about doing it with a glass a wine?
What can you do it make it more interesting?

Remember, once you do it, you’ll have more mental space to do the things you really want to do. You’ll feel lighter and have more energy.

Your Challenge

Your challenge this week is to do the thing you’re currently procrastinating on.

You want to make sure you to work WITH your brain not against it.
So, until you rewire your brain to make this task easier for yourself, understand the WHY, the benefits of it.

Do it at a time when your brain can think, don’t negotiate with yourself and make it FUN.
Yes! Have fun doing the task you don’t want to do!

You got this!
