When you do a task a second time, it should be easier & take faster, but does it?
Imagine you just spent 3 hours entering data to your customer excel sheet. You want to close your laptop and be done for the day.
But you’ve got one last step so that way next time it takes faster - metacognition.
What is metacognition?
The dictionary definitions metacognition as: “awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes.”
I like to call it, thinking about thinking.
This is the process of thinking about what you are doing, so that way next time you already have the strategies that you need and save time trying to figure it all out again.
You want to make metacognition a part of your life by doing it after every new or challenging task you do.
It doesn’t have to take long, simply think about what you’ve done specifically (this is the important part!) to get the task done.
It is extremely important you get specific about what happened so that way you can learn from it.
Here are some questions to get you started:
You can journal the answers, discuss them with the person who helped you do the task or simply think about them.
1. What was the #1 strategy that helped me do this task?
2. What information/supplies did I need to do this task?
3. How can I prepare myself next time, so this task takes faster?
4. What was the workflow/process of doing this task?
5. What strategy may be MORE beneficial to do this task next time?
Your challenge is to use metacognition at least 3 times this week, by thinking about how you did the task so next time it is easier!
