Why You Should Plan your Day

CUSTOM JAVASCRIPT / HTML

Imagine you open your laptop ready to begin working.
You start answering emails, rearranging your desk and doing a lot of busy work. 2 hours in you’ve got no real work done.

Having a Need to Make a Plan

There are a lot of reasons why you might be struggling with planning. Such as the cognitive deficiency of understanding time or an episodic grasp of reality.

The big one we’re going to focus on today is… drumroll… Having a need to make a plan.

But first - What is a cognitive function?

Cognitive functions are the things that make up thinking. That’s right, thinking is not one big thing but made up of 28 parts called cognitive functions.

The cognitive function of having to need a make a plan is just like it sounds - understanding the value in WHY you should plan.

Mental Operations

This cognitive functions in NOT about making the plan - that’s a mental operation.

Mental operations are when we take a whole bunch of cognitive functions together to do the actual task we are doing - so in this case, making the plan and following it through.

In future episodes we’ll go deeper on mental operations and how to plan your day effectively.
But none of that is going to work if your brain doesn’t understand why you should make a plan.

Why Should You Make a Plan?

So, let me ask you, why should you make a plan?
What are the benefits?
Stop for a moment and write down a few answers.

Here are a few reasons I came up with-

Benefits of Making a Plan:

  • You stay focused because you know what to do.
  • It makes your day easier as you know what’s coming on next.
  • You don’t waste time on not important things (like in the example we gave in the beginning.)
  • Your brain calms down because it knows what is coming up.
  • You prioritize better and rearrange your schedule so you’re doing it the most efficient way possible.
  • You’ll be motivated as you see things get done. It makes you accountable and helps keep you on track.
  • You will be able to see the big picture and identify what’s helping/stopping you from accomplishing your goals.

Now your brain has to see it to believe it.
So you’ve got to start practicing it.
