How often do you drop things?
What about crashing into things?
Rights and lefts? Do you know them?
There are sooo many things related to spatial awareness; in this episode we’ll discuss how to improve the cognitive function of orientation in space.
Thinking is not one big thing. Thinking is made up of 28 parts called cognitive functions.
Spatial Awareness or Orientation in Space as it’s sometimes called, is cognitive function that effects many areas of your life.
You may be struggling with some everyday tasks simply because this cognitive function is weak.
Let’s change that!
Improving the cognitive function of space takes time.
You’ll want to make sure to practice the following tips often till it becomes easy. See if there’s a way you can make them a part of your everyday life.
4 Ways for you to improve your spatial awareness:
1. The first thing you’ve got to do is to internalize your rights and lefts.
Start by using muscle memory! Raise your left hand and keep it up for a full five minutes while you say the word “left.”
2. You want to make sure you know the rights and lefts of people in other directions. Take a walk in a park and make a mental note of each person’s right and left hand.
3. Play a similar game with objects. Objects will be a bit more of a challenge for your brain as it will first have to figure out where’s the front of the first object and what’s its relation to the object you are looking at.
For example: Is the soap on the right or the left of the sink.
4. Spatial awareness also has a lot to do with how much space items take up or how much space is in between items. You can improve this, by imaging placing a new item in your room or office and visualizing how much space it will take up.
How far will it be from the things next to it?
How much space will have to walk around? etc.
This is a super useful skill to have whenever you move, plan a party or need to rearrange a room.
Your challenge this week is to pick one of the activities we spoke about and do it.
Better yet, if you can do it more than once, because it’s going to take multiple times and activities for your brain to really be rewired.
Bonus challenge: Listen to episode 356 where we discuss even more ways to improve this cognitive function.
