How to Give Clear Instructions

CUSTOM JAVASCRIPT / HTML

Have you ever given instructions and they weren’t followed through?

It’s very possible that the person you were talking to have a weak thinking skill that made them not do it correctly.

But it’s just as possible that you’ve got a weak thinking skill, that has made you not give the instructions in the right way.

Cognitive Functions

Thinking is not one big thing.
Thinking is made up of 28 parts called cognitive functions.
These cognitive functions affect everything we do.

Being precise is the only cognitive function that comes up twice.
Once when we’re gathering information and once when we’re telling the world we know, what we know.

If people aren’t understanding our instructions, it’s because we’re not being precise when we tell the world what we know and want.

Put this in the closet. What’s this? What closet? Where is the closet? All these details are related to giving clear, precise instructions.

How to Give Precise Instructions:

4 Things to keep in mind when giving clear, precise instructions:

  • Use labels. Instead of saying “this” or “there” say exactly what it is “The diet coke” or “the red folder that says clients on it”
  • Be specific. Talk as precise as possible when explaining where something is or goes. Don’t say “that closet” say “on the top self, on the right side of the pantry.”
  • Give clear, precise time frames. Next week can mean Monday, Thursday, or Friday. What day, what time? Get specific.
  • Make sure they understand what you said. Ask them if they have any questions and be patient with them as you listen and answer. The last thing you want to do is make them feel stupid for asking a question and next time they have one, they wouldn’t want to ask it.

Your Challenge

The difference between precise and imprecise instructions not only sounds really different but can prevent a lot of further mistakes in the future.
