Big Picture or Details?

CUSTOM JAVASCRIPT / HTML

Are you someone who sees the big picture usually or only the details?

What if I told you that you can train your brain to see both, big picture and details so you can use whichever one you need in this current situation.

Real Life Challenge

Imagine you hired a marketing agency to launch a new product. You know they’re really good, yet for some reason you keep on having small disagreements.
You feel like they’re missing out on details and they’re trying to tell you, “It will all come together in the end”

Categorizations

You might be struggling with this if you have the cognitive deficiency of Categorizations.
This is actually a cognitive function I struggled with for the longest time and always heard, “Look at the big picture.”

I was so caught up in making sure the details were accurate, my brain couldn’t see the big picture.
Now we need the to be able to see both.

There are times, we need to see the whole picture, see where we are going, what our ultimate goal is and there are times we need to see the details, what action steps do I need, what will help me in this situation.

The Cool Part

In some ways, the fact that I was able to see details really well without getting overwhelmed by the big picture, helped do things that other people weren't able to do.

For example, a lot of people get overwhelmed by a big mess they have to clean up.
My brain, maybe didn’t enjoy cleaning up, but I didn’t get overwhelmed by it because it was so focused on the details. Yeah, I could pick just lego.

I want this to be a reminder for you, that you can leverage your strong cognitive functions to improve your weaker ones.
Improving your cognitive functions will only enhance the skills you already have.

Today I’m going to give you ways to improve your brain’s ability to see the big picture and next week we’ll talk about finding the details.

Improving Categorizations

To get better at seeing the big picture, you’ve got to improve your cognitive function of categorizing - seeing the category, group name.

Here are 3 things you can do to improve your cognitive function of categorizing:

  • Start basic. Go thru different group names and then name so items in that group. Color: red, yellow, green, blue. Farm animals: cow, sheep, pig, horse. Make it more complex like prime number: 2,3,5,7,11,13,17 etc.
  • Reorganize a closet. But instead of the putting everything back where it was before, start from scratch and reorganize it based on groups, based on things that go together and how often you use them.
  • Take a group of items and see how many different ways you can categorize them. Examples snacks can be grouped into: color, texture, company, taste etc.

Now you’ve got to start getting conscious. Whenever you find yourself focusing on the details, ask yourself to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

Use the words Zoom in and Zoom out.

Focusing on the bigger picture is especially helpful when you have a task you don’t want to do but it’s part of a greater goal.
Remind yourself to what is the bigger reason why you are doing it.
