Your Brain's Emotional Responses

CUSTOM JAVASCRIPT / HTML

Why do you have an overload of emotion?
Why are you responding differently than other people?
And how do you release the emotion in a healthy way?

Real Life Challenge

Imagine you have just walked in from a long day at work only to see your 4-year-old has dumped out every single one of his toys on the floor.
You’re about to scream at him when you remember…

The Way Your Brain is Wired

The reason you want to respond this way is because of the way your brain is wired.

Because of environments and situations, you’ve been in the past, your brain created neuron connections causing you to behave in the way you.

Just like if someone has a traumatic experience, say for example, they were in plane crash, and now they don’t want to fly in planes, we know it’s because of their trauma.
What it really means is, in that process of plane accident their brain got wired to be afraid of planes.

The good news is that just because your brain is wired a certain way, it doesn't have to stay that way.

The Reason You Can Rewire Your Brain

The reason you can rewire your brain is because of a concept called Structural Cognitive Modifiability - which is kinda like when you have an old run-down building and you bring in workers to change the pipes, the flooring and redo the whole building.
In the end it looks completely different.

We can do the same thing to your brain - actually rewire it.

How to Rewire Your Brain

To make a change in the neuro connections in your brain, we need an outside force to get the brain to starting thinking about going down a different path.

2 avenues we can use:

  • Emotional
  • Cognitive

And you need to work on both!
Many times, its best when you work on both at the same time because as you work on the emotional, it’s opens up doorways for the thinking and as you work on the thinking, it opens up doorways for the emotional.

4 Ways to Get an Outside Force to Help Make Change

How to get an outside force to help you processes emotions and improve your thinking skills that were affected during the event:

  • A good therapist will help you with the emotional.
  • Journaling or scribbling with your nondominant hand (the hand you don’t usually write with) will help you release emotion and begin to process it on your own. Here the outside force is the journaling.
  • A mediator trained in understanding the thinking skills, aka me;) will help your brain create new neuron connections from a thinking standpoint and many times can help you with the emotional too, depending on your situation.
  • Doing the challenges in this podcast or ones I share on TikTok will also help you with the thinking skills, however they are for everyone and may not be targeted to what you need.

Your Challenge

Your challenge this week is to find and use an outside source to help you start rewiring your brain both emotionally and cognitively.
