If you’ve been listening to this podcast for a while, you probably heard the term mental operations be thrown around.
It’s time now we discuss what they are!
Thinking is not one big thing. Thinking is made up of 28 parts called cognitive functions.
Cognitive functions are the skills behind all skills.
In order to cook dinner, you need to use cognitive functions like clear perception, comparing and holding 2+ sources of information.
Got that?
Good.
Now let's move on to mental operations.
When you combine a cognitive function, cognitive function and more cognitive functions together, you get a mental operation.
For example, analyzing something requires clear perception, hold 2 courses of information, comparing and project virtual relationships.
If you are redoing your home and are analyzing a home decor magazine to get ideas, you need to use the following cognitive to analyze it:
1. Clear perception - seeing it in a clear organized manner.
2. Hold a few pieces of information - the many different things you see in the picture.
3. Comparing - Compare it to your house or other information in the magazine.
4. Projecting virtual relationships - see the relationship, how it is possible in your house.
All these thinking skills are required for you to do just the act of analyzing. All these cognitive functions together created the mental operation of analyzing.
Imagine how many more mental operations are required for you to decorate your whole house!
If any of the cognitive functions required for you to do the mental operation are weak, it’s going to be hard for you to do the task.
It’s also possible all your cognitive functions are strong, but when you put them together, you struggle.
That’s okay, because remember, no matter age, no matter your background, no matter what diagnosis you have, you can always improve your cognitive functions.
You can always make new neuron connections and rewire your brain.
Your challenge this week is to notice daily actions you do that require multiple cognitive functions at the same time.
