If cognitive functions are the skills behind all skills, and one of your cognitive functions are weak, how do you learn new skills?
You can learn almost any skill EVEN if you have a weak cognitive function.
Yes, you read that right.
You can learn almost any skill EVEN if you have a weak cognitive function.
HOWEVER, it will be extremely difficult.
For example, even if you struggle giving a thoughtful response (and highly related to the skill of copywriting and writing emails) you will still be able be send emails to your email list.
And you should!!
But it will probably be a real challenge.
Another example: If you are trying to improve your organization skills, but you struggle with the cognitive function of holding 2+ sources of information, you will still be able to improve your organization skills, but every you may find yourself picking up one pen put it away and then come back for a marker and put it away in the same place.
Is it possible to organize this way? 100% YES.
Is it really hard? YES!
Is there a way to make it easier? YES!!
We understand that if our cognitive functions are strong, it makes it a lot easier to learn new skills.
But before (or while!) we are improving our cognitive functions, how are we able to do it?
We able to learn new skills, even if the cognitive function related to that skill is weak. Because we our overcompensating with a different cognitive function we are really good at.
You may not think it’s so bad, but using a different cognitive function takes a lot of energy.
Back to our example, let’s say you’re really good at the cognitive function of hypothetical thinking (if and then thinking) and but not so good at giving a thoughtful response, without even realizing it, you’ll probably be using hypothetical thinking to write your emails.
"If I write this, then I have to write that..."
Because you are not so good at giving a thoughtful response, you have to do a lot more hypothetical thinking to write a simple sentence.
The best way to improve your writing skills would be to improve your cognitive function of giving a thoughtful response and then use BOTH hypothetical thinking and giving a thoughtful response to write your emails.
It will save you so much time and mental energy.
But I’m gonna say it again.
Just because you have a weak cognitive function it doesn’t mean you should learn a new skill.
So how do you identify where you are overcompensating for a weak cognitive function?
To be honest, this is a real challenge.
Because we are in it. We think this is a really smart way of doing it because we are really good at the strong cognitive function.
Here’s what I’ll suggest you do. If you haven’t taken the Cognitive Function assessment yet, you'll want to start by taking it here.
Then pick out one of your strongest cognitive functions and for the next couple of days, take note of where you see yourself doing it in your life.
Once you’ve got a list of a few, go back to the assessment and compare your activities to the assessment.
Was there any place that it would’ve been better if you used a different cognitive function?
Take it one step future by leveraging your strong cognitive function to improve your weaker ones.
Your challenge this week is to take the cognitive functions assessment, pick one of your strong cognitive functions and make a list of where you use it.
Then compare your activities back to the assessment and see if any other cognitive function would have been smarter to use.
