Are you quick to say things you wish you hadn’t?
Do you make decisions that you later regret?
Do you wish you were less impulsive?
What if I told you it was possible…
You might be struggling with this if you have the thinking skill of drumroll…. Showing impulsive behavior.
Yup!
Being impulsive is actually a weak cognitive function.
I know, you've got a question -
Being impulsive is an action. How is that related to thinking?
The act of think (or rather lack of thinking) leading to the impulsivity is what we are working on.
Here are five ways to help you reduce your impulsivity:
1. My obsolete favorite way to reduce impulsivity is to improve your sense of touch.
We spoke about it last week in depth, in episode 396 and how it’s related to improving your ability to focus. By taking away your eyesight and doing things blindfolded, you’re improving your sense of touch.
The reason it works so well with impulsivity is because it forces your brain to slow down.
2.Do challenging tasks that require you to slow down and think to figure out the answer. Anything that challenges your brain (like brain games such as chess, clue, chocolate fix, rush hour etc.) can help.
3.Slow down now, so you can speed up later. Understanding this concept makes it easier to understand why we need to slow down which will help you slow down.
I love going fast, but it doesn’t help if we become impulsive.
4.Have the strategy before you start.
When you have the strategy on how you are going to attack the task, you’re way more likely to follow the strategy and be less impulsive.
5. The motto of the Feuerstein method is Stop and Think. We live in a world where everything needs to happen now - including giving answer to a teacher. See if you can give yourself a few moments to stop and think for saying or doing something.
Your challeng is to choose one of the 5 things we spoke about and begin implementing it today. If you haven’t listened to last week’s episode 396, you’ll want to listen and implement what we spoke about there as it will help you a lot with impulsivity
