You’ve got waaaay to much to do everyday, but how do you decide what to focus on?
And one you decide, how do you make sure to follow it through?
Life always gets in the way.
It is your responsibility to focus on the important tasks first and then decide what to do with the rest of the work - delegate, eliminate, automate or do it another time.
Thinking is made up of 28 parts called cognitive functions. We use these cognitive functions to do almost every task.
Naturally we have stronger ones and weaker ones. Those weaker ones may make it challenging for you to do what you want to do.
You might be struggling with this if you have a weak cognitive function of having a need to make a plan, comparing or showing self-control.
First you've got to use the thinking skill of having a need to make a plan.
Actually making the plan requires you to use many cognitive functions, just having the need is what we are talking about here.
I think choosing what is most important to focus on in a business is a really good example, where many people wouldn’t see the need to make the plan.
They’re just going to swing it or figure out what is most important for that day.
You’ve got to see the benefits and want to do make the plan of what is most important.
Take a moment, ask yourself, WHY should you even plan?
In order to prioritize you've got to compare all your tasks and decide what is most important.
This is done by deciding what is MOST important in your business?
What is the needle moving activity?
Usually this will be something that generates money.
Then you can decide which tasks fit that specification.
Is it bringing more leads?
Providing clients with their orders?
Cold-calling?
Email marketing?
It’s worth taking the time to put your tasks in priority order so you always know what comes first - (But you'll only want to do this if you've already got the need to make a plan 😉)
Then comes following through with what you made up too do - showing self-control.
You made your plan, you’ve already decided, no changing it now.
Go do it.
I’d like to share with you the Eisenhower Matrix that might help you figure out what to focus on in your business.
Imagine 4 buckets:
1. Urgent & important
2. Urgent & not important
3. Important & not urgent
4. Not important & not urgent
The urgent & important bucket you want to do right now - think a potential client call.
The urgent and not important you want to delegate - answering every email.
Important & not urgent you want to schedule - think record social content for the next month.
Not important & not urgent you want to drop - watching Netflix.
The goal is to spend your most time in important and not urgent, because those activities will eventually become urgent.
You will still need to have a need to make a plan, compare and show self-control to follow the Eisenhower matrix.
Though I do hope it gives you a good framework.
Your challenge this week is to compare your tasks and figure out which one is #1 most important.
If you’d like to take this to the next level, put all your tasks in priority you so you know what you need to focus on.
