What’s a task you dread doing because it’s so mentally draining?
Is there a way to change it?
Make it less draining?
Maybe even enjoyable?
Thinking is not one big thing.
Thinking is made up of 28 parts called cognitive functions, naturally we all have stronger ones and weak ones but those weaker ones are making it challenging for you to do what you want to do.
When a task is mentally challenging it’s mentally draining.
Your brain doesn't want to do it & find all sorts of ways to procrastinate on doing the task.
Truth is, tasks need to be a little bit challenging or else they are boring.
There’s a sweet spot between a task being to challenging that you don’t want to do it and task being to easy that that is boring.
So what do you do if you’ve got a task that is mentally challenging?
First of all, if you have not taken the cognitive functions assessment you’ll want to do it right now.
This will show you where you are standing with each of the 28 cognitive functions so you can improve your weaker ones and having less mentally draining tasks.
Once you understand what cognitive function is making the task mentally draining you'll want to do 2 things:
Short term strategies are to help you right now.
You need to deal with your finances now. You need to process orders now. You need to write that email now.
To get the task done, you need something that will help you in the moment.
Maybe for dealing with your finances you ask a friend who is good in numbers to help.
Maybe you need to break it down to smaller tasks
How about doing it for just 10 minutes every day.
Find some strategy that will help you get it down now.
These strategies (or hacks) will help you get the task done right now but it is not a long term solution.
It is just a bandaid for you to use until you get the surgery, until you improve the cognitive function causing this task to be challenging.
For that, we need a long term strategy.
Long term strategies aren’t a one-and-done.
You’ve got to do them multiple times to start seeing results but they are actually solving the problem. They’re the surgery.
To create a long term strategy, you first got to understand which cognitive function is causing this task to mentally draining.
I’d suggest you start by taking the cognitive functions assessment and then match it to your task.
Which one of your weaker cognitive functions are making this task challenging?
Once you’ve figured that out, it’s time for some exercises to improve that specific cognitive function.
