Finding Missing Items Made Easy

CUSTOM JAVASCRIPT / HTML

Did you know the average person wastes 3 hours a week searching for missing items?
And if you’re a mom, how many times a day does a child ask you, "Do you know where my ______ is?"

What if you can find missing items in such an easy manner that even your kids find them easily so you don’t need to be looking for missing phones, keys, socks, toys documents all day long?

Real Life Challenge

Imagine you are about to start an important meeting with a potential client.
If this meeting goes well, you'll hopefully be signing a $30,000 deal, but you can’t find an important document you are looking for. You KNOW you had it on your desk just an hour ago and the meeting is starting in 15 minutes.

Systematic Search

You might be struggling with finding what you are missing, if you have the weak thinking skill of systematic search.

Systematic search is simply about searching in a system.
Most of the times when we’re looking for something, we tend to look in the same place 6 times and not in the place where the missing item actually is.

Systematic search allows you to look in every place without looking any place double.

The way it works is, you create a system and look in that system. It doesn’t really matter what the system is as long as you follow it.

Looking for a book? You might want to start from the top shelf, going down to the bottom self, and on each self, go left to right.

For your important document, you might start from the left of your desk working your way towards the right, going through every document. If it’s not there after going through every part of your desk, you’ll want to go from one side of the room to the other, searching systematically.

Systematic search is simple.
You can teach it to your child even as young as 3 years old. (They love saying systematic search!)
Next time your child asks you if you know here their toy is, you simply say - Did you do systematic search?

The Reason Systematic Search Work So Well

  • Your covering all ground without wasting time looking in same place more then once.
  • When your brain has a system, it calms down and can now start thinking. You may find yourself remembering where the missing item actually is.

Some people complain that systematic search takes too long.
It’s true in the beginning you may find it taking slightly longer but as you do it more, your brain will come up with better systems and will learn to look systematically quicker.
Plus, if you do it right you almost always find it.

Prevent Lost Items

I would like to add, the reason you are constantly missing your items is because of weak thinking skills. When your thinking skills are strong you lose fewer items, and you don’t need to waste time looking for missing items.

One quick tip to prevent yourself from losing your stuff is to make sure every item has a home.
A place for your car keys. A place for your shoes.  A place for important documents.
The more practical and convenient the place is for your items, the easier it will be for you to keep them there.

For example: I like to keep the car keys on hooks right near the door so you can grab them on your way out and hang them right back up on your way in.

Your Challenge

Your challenge this week is to use systematic search next time you are missing something.
And bonus!  Teach at least one person how to do systematic search.

Cheers to Peak Brain Performance!
