Understanding Executive Functions in ADHD

CUSTOM JAVASCRIPT / HTML

One of the common struggles of ADHD is having a hard time with executive functions.
But why? What causes executive dysfunction and what can one do about it?

Executive Functions

Firstly, what are executive functions?

Executive functions are the skills we use to organize and act on information.

There are 8 key executive functions.
As you read them, if you’ve got any knowledge about cognitive functions, I want you to think about the connection.

  • Impulse Control
  • Emotional Control
  • Flexible thinking
  • Working Memory
  • Self-Monitoring
  • Planning & prioritizing
  • Task Initiation
  • Organization

Executive Functions & Cognitive Functions

Have you seen a relationship between executive functions and cognitive functions?

Cognitive functions are the foundational thinking skills.
In order to do any task, you use the cognitive functions.
Including executive functions.

In other words -
In order to do the executive functions, you need to use cognitive functions.

ADHD & Executive Dysfunction

Although people with ADHD struggle with executive functions, it’s not because they have ADHD, it’s because they have weak cognitive functions.

Guess what?
The cognitive functions are thinking skills.
And because they are skills, that means you can learn them.
Even if you have ADHD.

People with ADHD tend to struggle with similar cognitive functions. They may need to learn them differently than people who don’t have ADHD. But it doesn’t mean they can’t learn it.

As soon as they improve their cognitive functions and learn how to use them together with other cognitive functions, Voila! Their executive functions have magically improved!
