Have you've ever opened the door to a clean a room, but instead of trying to organize it, you walked right out?
You were probably struggling with blurred perception.
Usually, we use our 5 senses to take in information in a clear and organized way.
This uses the thinking skill of clear perception.
If it feels overwhelming or blurry you are probably having a challenging time with this thinking skill. It's now blurred perception.
There are 2 reasons why a person (especially someone with ADHD) might just walk out of a room instead of trying to clean it.
Both come from the blurred perception.
If you struggle with too much happening and you can’t even take in all the information, you’ll want to go through your 5 senses and just ask yourself:
What do I see?
List out everything you see.
What do I hear?
List out everything you hear.
What do I smell?
List out everything you smell.
What do I feel?
List out everything you feel.
What do you taste?
List out everything you taste.
This way you are allowing your brain to calm down and the information in a clear and organized way.
Once you’ve got the information, if you struggling to use it and organize it, you simply want to ask yourself:
What is my starting point? What is the very first step I need to take to get this done?
Pick up the garbage.
Done.
Good.
What is my next one step?
The goal here is to get moving.
As you do what you need to do, it will create clarity in your brain, and you’ll be able to figure it out.
If you find yourself overwhelmed again, you may want to go back to the previous step and go through the 5 senses to take in the information in a clear and organized way.
Then you can ask yourself what is your starting point?
Your challenge this week is to practice the exercises that help with clear perception.
Go through the 5 senses and list out what you see, then create a starting point.
In the beginning, you will need to be very conscious about it.
As you do it more and more, it will happen more and more naturally till you don’t have to think about it anymore.
