I have a feeling more than 50% of arguments and disagreements wouldn’t happen if you take care of this one thinking skill.
It’s simple to understand and goes very deep.
Often, people get into disagreements because they are not using the thinking skill of labeling.
Labeling is about calling items, ideas, concepts, etc. by their right label so everyone knows what we’re talking about.
One way you’ll notice you’re not using labels is if you find yourself using vague words such as, "this, that, there, whatever" without fully expressing yourself.
If you tell your child, "Get the book from there" they don’t know what book and they don’t know what there is.
Using the label of "The Goldilocks book" from the "bottom shelf in the playroom" is bound to improve understanding.
When items don't have labels, we need to create the label so people know what you are talking about.
Think rituals, systems, and plans you made up. Anything your business has created.
This way everyone can understand and communicate what you are talking about.
The big way a lack of labels shows up is in arguments when people use the same word/phrase but put a different meaning to it.
I’m asking you to communicate, you say you are communicating but what you mean and what I mean about communication are different.
You may be using the “programs” to talk about all our live programs while I'm using the word “programs” which also includes the online, self-paced programs.
You can see how this will most definitely affect how we talk about cash flow, profits, plans, etc.
What you want to do to remove as many arguments as possible, is to right at the beginning of a discussion, ask the people who are talking to define or tell you what they mean, when they use the keywords of this discussion.
If you are having a team meeting, you can start the meeting by writing and defining the words you will be using.
Today, we spoke about how the lack of labels creates a lot of confusion, miscommunication, and arguments.
By simply being aware of the labels you are using and clarifying them with the people around you, you find yourself saving lots of time and aggravation. Don’t be surprised if it saves your marriage:)
Your challenge is exactly that - be aware and use those labels correctly until it happens by yourself without you even having to think about it.
