Mickey was a party planner with incredible ADHD energy. Her clients loved her as she did amazing work and the life of the party.
But it wasn’t always easy.
Mickey was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 38, had to take Adderall to stay on top of her life, had things all over the place, messy room, supplies, lists, notes…. It all come together in the end but only after a full-blown hurricane.
During our second week of sessions, while asking a question, Mickey mentioned, “We’re here to help us with our ADHD challenges so they’re easier to deal with…”
I stopped her midsentence.
This is not why we’re here.
We are here to approach ADHD differently.
Most ADHD experts will tell you, that you have these challenges because you have ADHD. This is what you’ve got to deal with.
Guess what?
Just because you’ve got a challenge right now, it doesn’t mean it will always has to be a challenge.
Your ADHD Challenges are not challenges BECAUSE you have ADHD.
They are challenges because of weak think skills.
As soon as you improve those weak thinking skills, it is no longer a challenge.
For example, if you struggle with time management, it’s not BECAUSE you have ADHD it’s a challenge.
Rather, it’s a challenge because your brain struggles with the thinking skill of understanding time.
Just because your brain doesn’t understand time now, it doesn’t mean it wouldn’t understand time in the future. It simply needs to learn the skill of understanding time.
Tears started streaming down Mickey’s face, “You don’t understand,” she said. “My whole life, I’ve been living in a room. In this room I had everything I need, water, clothes, a bed, everything. But there was no door and no window. I stuck living this room. You now just gave me a door. There’s a way out to bigger, brighter, better world.”
That’s exactly it, my friend. Stronger thinking skills give you a way to bigger, brighter, better world.
You want to change your approach to all your ADHD challenges.
Instead of thinking, "Oh I can’t do this I’ve got ADHD and just accepting it as is."
You want to think, "Right now this is a challenge. How can I approach it, so it is no longer a challenge?"
I’m not saying it’s going to be easy overnight.
But with a growth mindset, you’ll be able to improve any area you want to improve.
This week, I’d like you to catch yourself anytime time you say a fixed mindset sentence about yourself.
It’s not that you can’t do it. It’s that you can’t do yet.
