Mike was a graphic designer for high end companies, yet his communication was in the dumps.
He spoke vaguely and would often need to show what he was talking about to express himself.
His employees joked he had “Mike Language” because spoke in half sentences, call lots of items “thing” and only say parts of what he was thinking.
While his employees and close family members learned “Mike language” it created many problems and challenges.
Often there would be misunderstandings that led Mike to lose money, time or left the client very unhappy.
By improving ONE thinking skill, Mike communication shot up and any issues related to communication, disappeared.
While you are doing any task, you (without even realizing it!) are using your 28 thinking skills.
When the thinking skills you need to use are strong, doing the task is easy.
If the thinking skill you need to use is weak, doing the task will be a challenge.
The struggle that Mike had, came from a weak thinking skill of being precise.
Precision is an interesting thinking skill as it’s the only one that comes up twice.
Once, when you take in the information and again when you give the information.
In Mike’s case, he wasn’t being precise when he communicated, when he was giving the information.
Improving precision boils starts with being aware.
Am I expressing this precisely or am I being vague?
Pointing, making up words, saying half sentences or saying anything other than exactly what you mean to say, is not being precise.
By being aware and noticing your choice of words, you’re already halfway there.
Personally, I found working on talking precisely works best when you tell the people around you that you want to improve this thinking skill.
Tell them, anytime you are not talking 100% precisely, they should stop you and have you repeat what you just said in a precise manner.
If you have no one around you to support you, you’ll want to join Optimize Your ADHD Brain. There you’ll have entrepreneurial friends who are going along the same journey with you and are there to support you every step of the way.
You’ll also want to put reminders in everywhere - on your mirror, screensaver, everywhere, whatever you need to keep the concept of talking precisely top of mind.
When you talk precisely, you’ll have A LOT less miscommunications, saved time, mistakes and your team will be able to perform way better.
I can’t even tell you how many times, I work with a business where there’s lack of precise language that causes chaos.
You thought I meant that while she said X and he did Y.
It’s worth taking the time to explain exactly what you mean in the most precise why to prevent mistakes from happening.
Your challenge this week is to either tell the people around you, you want to work on being precise so they should stop you any time you’re not being precise.
OR, if you don’t have the support system that be your own support system with lots and lots of reminders.
