While doing the brain exercises in Optimize Your ADHD Brain, Brenda would find herself constantly switching strategies midway through.
Since these exercises were created to see what’s happening in your brain & life, it didn’t take long to see where in business, Brenda was switching strategies.
It happened in following the systems she created, in following through on tasks she said she was going to do, and even in communicating with her team.
By improving her thinking skills, Brenda was able to stay focused and get more done in less time.
Plus, her anxiety went down, so all aspects of her life improved.
While you are doing any task, you (without even realizing it!) are using your 28 thinking skills.
When the thinking skills you need to use are strong, doing the task happens easily.
If the thinking skill you need to use is weak, doing the task will be a challenge.
The struggle that Brenda had, came from a weak thinking skill of comparing & providing logical evidence.
Often, Brenda would jump into a task without really thinking about how to do it. She’d find herself doing a strategy and then second-guessing if this strategy was the right one.
By first comparing what strategy would be best for this situation and then providing logical evidence as to WHY this was true, she was able to trust herself in and stayed on the strategy that worked best.
We’ve spoken about comparisons many times in the past (including episodes 476 & 478) and so today we’re gonna focus on providing logical evidence
1) Firstly, before starting any task, take a moment to think about what strategy you are going to use and explain why it was the best for this situation.
2) Do the opposite - Show why the other strategies are less effective.
Be careful with this as you might find yourself getting more confused as there are pros and cons to each strategy.
If you find yourself getting tripped up with this, simply do this only in hypothetical situations.
3) On a more general level you want to provide logical evidence in all areas of life.
Take 5 minutes a day when you’re talking to an employee, partner, or client where you are consciously providing logical evidence to whatever you are talking about.
Your challenge this week is to take a moment to think about and prove why the strategy you are about to use will best here. Take the time to really give a good reason. The better you can explain it to your brain, the more likely your brain will be motivated to stick to it.
