The Power of Precision in Leading Your Team

Case Study

Harry joined Optimize Your ADHD Brain, while his business was growing at a rapid pace.
He needed to hire at least a dozen new roles, yet he was worried his business would collapse due to his employees.

He shared how he went through a long interview process where he knew the people he hired had the skills and ambition.
Yet for some reason, they weren’t doing what he wanted them to do.
Deadlines were missed, work had to get redone a few times, and everything was a mess.
And why was that with everyone? It can’t be that all 45 employees were wrong.

It didn’t take long for us to figure it out, it came down to one of his weak thinking skills.

As soon as we improved his thinking skills and made simple shifts in his culture, not only did his employees do the work in the best way possible they also shared how much they loved working there.

Thinking Skills

While you are doing any task, you (without even realizing it!) are using your 28 thinking skills.

When the thinking skills you need to use are strong, doing the task happens easily.
If the thinking skill you need to use is weak, doing the task will be a challenge.

The struggle that Harry had, came from a weak thinking skill of precision.

Intro

Precision

Precision is the only thinking skill that comes up twice - once when we get information, and another time when we give information.

In Harry’s case, he lacked precision when giving information, causing his employees to not fully understand what they wanted from him.

He thought he gave over the info, but it was only part of the info.
And there wasn’t a culture among the staff to make sure you’re getting precise information.

You see, as a leader, when giving over information you want to make sure it’s as precise as possible.

You also want to make sure your employees are self-aware enough to know whether they’ve gotten precise information and if not, are comfortable enough to ask for it.

Precision Overall

To help Harry, I wanted to make sure his general thinking skill of precision was strong.

So, whenever Harry was giving over information (whether it was sharing in session, doing a brain exercise, or sending me an email) I’d have him take the time to make sure he was being precise.
If for some reason he wasn't, I'd have repeat it in a more precise manner.

While in the beginning, it took a moment, over time, it started happening naturally.

Precision with the Team

Now to help Harry specifically with precise communication in his team, I shared with him what I do with my employees, and it speed up the precision processes.

  • Anytime I give someone a task, no matter how small it is, I tell them a date/time by which it needs to be done. If I don’t give them a deadline, I expect them to ask for it so that way we’re all on the same page. It goes the other way too, if they need something from me, they know when to expect it done by.
  • We always define the keywords of a conversation. Ex: What does a “100% money-back guarantee” mean? While it may seem obvious, slight nuances can lead to great miscommunication.
  • We are constantly encouraging questions. We’ve created a culture where people respect someone else’s question no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. This creates an environment of growth, openness, and learning.

Your Challenge

Your challenge this week is to take an extra minute when giving over information to make sure it’s as precise as possible. Remove vague words, give deadlines, and make sure the other person is completely clear about what they’re expected to do
