On my first call with Steven, he told me the only reason he was talking to me was because his wife sent him to me.
He owned a very successful VA agency yet was never home.
There simply wasn’t enough time in the day to run the business and spend time with his family.
Or so he thought.
During the second week of Optimize Your ADHD Brain, one thinking skill clicked and he never looked at the world the same way.
With this new understanding, Steven was able to grow his business and was able to be home for dinner almost every day.
He reconnected with his wife for the first time in a long time and enjoyed spending time with 2 little ones again.
While you are doing any task, you (without even realizing it!) are using your 28 thinking skills.
When the thinking skills you need to use are strong, doing the task happens easily.
If the thinking skill you need to use is weak, doing the task will be a challenge.
The struggle that Steven had, came from a weak thinking skill of understanding reality.
Understanding reality is a thinking skill that many ADHDers struggle with.
Often, we're just so fast to take action that don’t give ourselves a minute to process if this makes sense.
So, what is understanding reality?
Understanding reality is about understanding cause and effect of reality.
If it’s raining outside and leave the house without a jacket or umbrella, I’ll get wet.
In business terms, if I decide to take on this project, it’s gonna require at least 40 hours to get it done.
Or, If I don’t put down my boundary with the new client now, they’re gonna text me often at 11 pm.
With ADHD we see the end result, we see the prize but we don’t often calculate how to get there.
No, this not me telling you not to go after your dreams.
This me getting you to see your dreams from a different perspective so you can achieve ALL your dreams.
So, you can build your dream business AND spend time with your family.
My favorite way to start understanding reality is to ask this bold question:
This would be impossible unless…
In Steven’s case
It would be impossible to grow my business and be home in time for dinner every night unless...
- I hire an operations manager.
- Streamline our services.
- Empower employees to take responsibility for their work instead of coming to me with problems.
Now Steven is viewing the whole situation differently.
It’s viewing the situation through the lenses of reality and making adjustments to the work, not to the end goal.
Another thing I did with Steven to really drill in understanding reality, was having him take 5 minutes at the end of the work day, to write 5 cause-and-effect actions that happened that day.
For example, when I greeted the potential client with a smile and said their first name, I noticed they immediately relaxed.
Or by setting a specific time to answer emails, I was able to stay more focused instead of checking my emails every couple of minutes.
This trained Steven’s brain to see the connections between the actions he was taking.
Your challenge this week is to use the question “It would be impossible to do X unless…”
Let your brain think bigger and use reality to help you achieve your goals.
