James always started with the easy stuff.
It felt good to check things off, but the important work? It never got done.
He’d run out of time before moving his business forward
It was frustrating, exhausting, and felt like spinning his wheels.
We improved one thinking skill that shifted how he saw the business.
He changed how he approached the work and not only was he able to grow the business by 20% he also was able to work less hours.
While you are doing any task, you (without even realizing it!) are using your 28 thinking skills.
When the thinking skills you need to use are strong, doing the task happens easily.
If the thinking skill you need to use is weak, doing the task will be a challenge.
The struggle that James had, came from a weak thinking skill of Understanding Reality.
Understanding Reality about understanding the world’s natural consequences.
If I go outside when it’s raining, if I don’t have an umbrella or raincoat, I’m gonna get wet.
That’s reality.
Business works the same way, if I scroll social media, instead of following up leads, I’m gonna be making less money.
Once we understand what life is, we can work with it, instead of fighting it the whole time.
Here’s the thing: when understanding reality is weak, we think we can wrap the world to make what we want happen for us. Except, if often doesn’t.
If it does, it comes with crazy late nights, pressure, a ton of stress…. That all needed to happen to work with reality.
To make it more abstract, concrete, and easy for you to work with, you want to think of your day as a jar.
If I have a jar and fill it up with sand, there’s gonna be no room for the rocks.
However, if I put the rocks in first and then pour in the sand, the sand will be able to go into the gaps and fill up the jar.
Every day you get a jar.
You want to start filling up your jar by first putting in your rocks.
Your rocks are your most important tasks that you need to do. This is what you start with.
Then you can pour in some pebbles.
What is the other work/activities that would be good if you did?
These are less important but still have value.
Finally, you add in the sand.
This is anything extra, the fun, easy, I like doing this, but it’s not really so important. Any gaps you have left in your jar, aka your day, can be filled with sand.
Your challenge this week is to look at each day like a jar.
Fill up your jar with your most important tasks FIRST.
(Often, you’ll notice many of your other tasks don’t even need to happen.)
Then pour in the pebbles; these are tasks of value but not the highest priority or leverage.
And finally, add in your sand.
