Andrew owned a bike rental business and genuinely believed he had a growth mindset.
He was always staying positive, no matter what.
But when things got tough, instead of fighting through, he quietly accepted that “this is just how it’s going to be.”
He accepted it with grace, thinking this is how the world works, just like the law of gravity.
This acceptance was actually getting in his way of reaching his full potential.
As we worked on strengthening his growth mindset, not only did his business grow, so did his confidence.
He opened up, enjoyed the day-to-day more and had a twinkle in his eye that was seen every time he spoke.
While you are doing any task, you (without even realizing it!) are using your 28 thinking skills.
When the thinking skills you need to use are strong, doing the task happens easily.
If the thinking skill you need to use is weak, doing the task will be a challenge.
The struggle that Andrew had, came from a weak growth mindset.
Andrew joined Optimize Your ADHD Brain, thinking growth mindset was about being positive.
Sure, people who have a growth mindset are often more positive because they believe in the possibility of what can happen. But that’s not really what growth mindset is about.
Someone with a growth mindset believes that they way they are can always change.
No matter their circumstances, they can always improve and get better.
Andrew used to laugh off his weaknesses. “I know, I’m a mess, but it's okay and it works.”
Sure, you can run a bike rental business if your shop is a mess, but it will probably be a lot easier if things are organized. Customers will enjoy the experience more, things will move faster, people won’t be waiting while you find the last key etc.
We had to develop Andrew’s growth mindset even on the things he thought were okay.
Since he was so good at just making do, I had to take Andrew out of his current state.
I asked Andrew:
Hypothetically….If you had to create the perfect business owner what would it look like?
Andrew wrote up a few lines describing his character, his shop, his behaviors etc.
Then we compared his current situation to this hypothetical situation.
What was not there? These were all the places we now knew Andrew needed to work on.
It’s that Andrew was bad before; it’s just that he had so much more potential.
Your challenge this week is to see where you are telling yourself it’s really okay when it can be so much better.
What do you laugh about?
Deal with?
What is “that’s just me”?
Yet if you knew it was different, you’d get a better outcome.
I know it’s not easy to face it, to say the truth out loud, but once you start seeing the results, it will be so worth it.
