Amanda was a public speaker who wore her ADHD like a badge of honor.
She was on meds and saw them as her lifeline. There was no way she wanted to let them go.
Four months after we finished working together, she sent me a message that stopped me in my tracks.
Because of what we did, she was off her meds for good.
“It’s all because of the work we did together,” she told me.
I was so surprised as I never told her to go off her meds.
While you are doing any task, you (without even realizing it!) are using your 28 thinking skills.
When the thinking skills you need to use are strong, doing the task happens easily.
If the thinking skill you need to use is weak, doing the task will be a challenge.
The struggle that Amanda had, came from a weak growth mindset.
When Amanda signed up to join Optimize Your ADHD Brain, she proudly told me she was on ADHD medication.
I asked her if she was happy with it, and she told me this was the only way she was able to function. Super common answer.
I told her, if she can, wait till after our session to take the meds.
Our session was in the morning and I knew she didn’t need to take it the same time every day.
At first, it didn’t happen as Amanda held onto the meds with her dear life, but eventually, depending on what else she had on that day, Amanda would come into session in her natural state.
(Which, by the way, I absolutely LOVE. I want you in your full glory:))
Also, when you’re not under the influence of meds, the effects of OYB happen much faster, often because you’re brain is working in more full function.
Anyhow, the cohort ended, and Amanda made MASSIVE progress in her thinking skills, but the thing that came out most was how she thought about herself.
She no longer used ADHD as an excuse.
Instead of saying something was hard for her “because she had adhd,” she thought, “How can I do this?”
Instead of just accepting herself the way she was, she believed in herself and what was possible.
I get a message from Amanda:
“Hey ST, how are you? I wanted to let you know, I was recently on vacation and didn’t take my ADHD meds.
When I came home, I was about to take them again when I realized I functioned the whole time without them, I don’t really need them anymore. My brain has developed in way where I can focus when I want to.
If I need to remember something, instead of just brushing it off because I’m bad at memory, I give myself a minute to think, and usually it comes right back. So yeah, I’m off my meds, and it’s all because of you. Thank you!!”
Honestly, I was shocked because going off her meds wasn’t even a card on the table.
I’m not telling you to go off meds. And please don’t do it without a doctor!!
Instead, I want you to question your capabilities.
What is something that you’ve just learned to accept about yourself that doesn’t need to stay this way forever?
What do you have a fixed mindset about?
Cheers to Peak Brain Performance!
