Don’t Let Assumptions Cause You to Lose Money

Case Study

Heather ran a print shop and was used to making quick assumptions.

Most of the time, she was right.
But other times, those assumptions led to costly mistakes, like redoing big print jobs that ran into the hundreds or even thousands of dollars. It was frustrating and expensive.

Once she learned to recognize when her gut was on point (which thinking skill it really was!) and when to pause and ask questions, she not only saved a ton of money but also helped her gain more trust with her clients and with herself.

Thinking Skills

While you are doing any task, you (without even realizing it!) are using your 28 thinking skills.

When the thinking skills you need to use are strong, doing the task happens easily.
If the thinking skill you need to use is weak, doing the task will be a challenge.

The struggle that Heather had, came from a weak thinking skill of hypothetical thinking.

Hypothetical Thinking

Another way of saying hypothetical thinking is the "If... Then..." thought process.
It’s the ability to imagine different possibilities and outcomes before you actually have to deal with them

When this thinking skill is strong, you can run mental simulations, like little test drives in your head, so you don’t crash and burn in real life.

But when this thinking skill is weak, you tend to jump straight to conclusions or stick to the first answer your brain throws at you.

That’s exactly what Heather was doing.
She’d trust her gut and move fast, which sometimes worked, but sometimes meant she miscalculated because she didn’t give herself space to say, “Wait, what else could happen here?”

3 Ways to Improve Hypothetical Thinking

3 Ways we improved Heather’s hypothetical thinking:

1) Taking a moment to ask herself if she has all the information.
Instead of jumping to conclusions based on what she thinks she knows, taking that moment to see if she even has the information

2) If she doesn’t have all the information, simply ask for it.
Basic right? We're just so used to assuming. Ask.

3) Use the words If and Then
If...Then...
If I print it like X... Then it will be Y...
If I don't have what I need... Then I should ask for...

Your Challenge

Your challenge this week is to use the term IF... and Then... when you're trying to figure out an answer.
