Copying Success Doesn't Work When You Miss the Details

Marrisa kept trying to “copy success” but could never make it actually work for her.
She ran a small interior design business and followed every strategy course under the sun. She’d find someone successful on Instagram, take screenshots of their posts, save their email funnels, and even mimic their client process.

But every time she copied what someone else was doing, it just… didn’t land. The clients didn’t come. Her posts flopped, and her systems fell apart the minute something changed.

On her initial call with me, I could see right away that Marissa was a hard worker, but one weak thinking skill was causing her to work harder than she had to.
As soon as we improved that thinking skill, Marissa was able to duplicate systems easily and finally get the results she was looking for.

Thinking Skills
While you are doing any task, you, without even realizing it, are using your 28 thinking skills.
When the thinking skills you need to use are strong, doing the task happens easily.
If the thinking skill you need to use is weak, doing the task is a challenge.
The struggle that Marissa had came from a weak thinking skill in gathering precise data.

Gathering Precise Data
Gathering precise data
is your brain’s ability to notice the exact parts that matter, the tiny details within the bigger system or task.
When precision is weak, your brain gets the general idea, but when it tries to use the information, the tiny detail is off, so it doesn’t work.

For example, if you get someone’s email address but you’re one letter off, that email is not going to go where you want it to go.
Marissa would understand the general strategy (for example, post twice a day) but no realize there were different kinds of posts to hit different buyers.

Once we strengthened gathering precise data, Marissa was able to explain and copy the details of her strategy.

While Marissa was hesitant to break down the details in the beginning, she quickly found that she had a much easier time using the strategy again, and now she wanted to see all the details. Especially when the strategies started working for her.

Improving gathering data often seems boring in the beginning.
If you stick it out long enough, you’ll start seeing the results and have an easier time doing it more.

3 Exercises to Improve Gathering Precise Data

Here are 3 exercises you can do to help you improve gathering precise data:

1) Next time you see something impressive, be it a strategy, a book, a piece of art, a speech, whatever, take a minute to list out the parts that made it so good. There’s a really good chance that there are many parts that made it good. See how many you can find.

2) Take two or three of your top pieces of content. List out what the parts that made this content do so well. Are there any similarities between them? Now you can use those elements to help you with your future content.

3) Next time you do something well, be it a launch, a party, or even cleaning your house, before you celebrate, take a minute to get really clear on the details that have helped you do this task well.
Bonus if you write them down so you can do it again in the future.

Benefits of Gathering Precise Data
Gathering precise data means capturing the specific details that make success repeatable instead of random.
Without this thinking skill, you often have to rebuild from scratch because you can't recreate what you've already figured out.

When your gathering precise data gets stronger, you stop reinventing solutions you've already perfected. Your successes become repeatable models instead of lucky accidents you can't recreate.
