Cognitive Functions Assessment for Entrepreneurs (1).gif

Simple Decisions and ADHD Brains

Lauren is a nutritionist who does incredible work helping people with eating disorders.
The first time I spoke to Lauren, she told me, “I’ve consumed SO MUCH of your content. I need help with it all. Planning, procrastination, communication, memory. I struggle with many aspects of ADHD and I need your help with all of it.”

Tall order, but I knew were going to make it happen!

The first thing I wanted to do was to understand which thinking skill will have the greatest improvement on Lauren’s life.

If you’re new here, thinking is not one big thing. Thinking is made up of 28 parts, 28 thinking skills.
Naturally, we all have some thinking skills that are weaker and others that are stronger.

The stronger thinking skills make it easy for us to do what we want to do and the weaker ones get in the way.

But since they’re skills, we can learn them and once we learn them, anything related to that skill becomes easier.
To see how strong your thinking skills are, you can take the thinking skills assessment at: www.lifepixuniversity.com/cf

In Lauren’s case, she had a few weak thinking skills, so I wanted to start by improving the weak thinking skill that would have the greatest impact on her life and business.

So, I did a bit of digging (asking questions) and realized a big struggle was creating a structure for the day. Every day Lauren would go over the same dilemma of what’s most important to do today. She tried to do the “top 3 priorities of the day” but everything felt so important. It was hard to pick.

Another thing she struggled with was creating the structure. Even if she’d plan her day, when time came, she’d ask herself again if this was the best use of her time.
Both prioritizing and figuring out if this was the best thing to do now both require you to use to the thinking skill of comparing.

While I had a feeling that improving comparison would have a massive ROI for Lauren, I wanted to see if there was a different thinking skill that would be improved.

So I asked Lauren to share another thing she was struggling with. Shopping was a big one. Whether it was grocery shopping or clothing shopping, it always took ages and drained her so quickly.
Guess why she struggled with shopping? Decisions. Deciding what’s the best option was soooo hard for her. Also comes from comparing.

At this point, I knew it was quite obvious. Her top 3 struggles all require comparing.

As soon as we improved comparing, priorizing, creating the structure and deciding where all git easier. We did work in ONE area and many areas improved.

Comparing is your brain's ability to evaluate a few options and figure out what’s best in this situation.
For shopping, comparing would show up in say paper towels.
Cost-effective vs convenient vs eco-friendly vs quality
Which option matters MOST for this specific purchase right now?

For daily planning, its compaing which tasks is urgent vs important vs enjoyable vs helps long term. What is most important?

When your comparison is strong, you know right away what's important in that situation and how to compare each option to your desired outcome, so that way you can figure out exactly what to do.

The first thing you need to do in any situation that requires comparing, is getting clear on what’s important.
Don't even look at your options. Just ask yourself what is important here?

Before you enter the grocery store, ask yourself what's important?
Price? Quality? Health?

Before you prioritize your day, ask yourself what's important?
Is there a deadline you have coming up? Maybe you’re working on a long term goal?

Before you decide on what kind of content to create, ask yourself, what’s important?
Sales? Brand awareness? Speaking engagments? Get clear first.

Then, when you look at your options, you don’t need to look at all the factors. Only look at the factors that are most important to you.

You can take this even further by putting the factors that are most important to you in priority order. That way the decision becomes obvious.

If you know color is most important, then fit, then price, guess what? You’ll only try on a dress if it’s the right color. And if you have 3 dresses that are the right color, you’ll see which is the best fit and if they all fit beautifully, it comes down to price and there you have it. A decision made in seconds. No overthinking.

If you're struggling to figure out what is most important, ask yourself the following question:
If I can only have ONE element which will I pick?

This helps your brain actually compare the factors. The more information there is, the higher level of comparisons you need to have. Right now comparing is weak, so it’s a challenge for your brain to pick.

Answer the question of which ONE element can I have either by:
Process of elimination. Cut out what’s a no until you’re left with just one
Or
Write down all the factors involved in the decision and compare just the top two. Of these two factors which is more important. Then compare the winner with the next factor on the list. Repeat till you get to the end of the list. The winner will be the answer to which ONE element is most important

Remember, the stronger your thinking skill of comparing is, the easier it is to figure what’s MOST important and compare the options accordingly.

That's why I had Lauren do comparing exercises simply for the sake of improving comparing.

All you’ve got to do is take 2 random items in your house and compare them.
Just make sure you’re comparing them on the same parameter.
Color of both.
Size of both.
Texture of both.

Do this again and again until its super easy.

Then you’re gonna take it up a notch and this time you’re gonna compare two items just by thinking about it. Don’t have them near you. Hold them in your mind and compare them on the same parameter.

Ready to take it up a notch again?

This time your gonna compare ideas, concepts or frameworks. Eisenhower matrix, sales call frameworks, content strategies, hiring processes, steps to processing emotions etc. Once again you’re gonna makes sure youre coming the concepts on same parameters, how long it takes, what it solves, who can use it, etc

NOTE: This will be hard if you don’t do the first two steps of comparing items, first. This is way more abstract and uses higher level of comparing

By the end of Optimize Your ADHD Brain, Lauren shared with me her before and after. “I honestly can’t believe I once struggled with prioritizing and making decisions. It know happens so automatically.”
That my friends, is what happens when you solve the root issue.
