Making It Easier to Know What to Say

Case Study

Cathy was a consultant who helped businesses get more government funding.
Smart, driven, and great at what she did, but there was one thing holding her back.

She kept saying things in meetings that she didn’t mean to.
Not trying to be rude, but the kind of comments that made everyone in the room uncomfortable.
Her assistant even started messaging her mid-meetings with polite reminders like “stop talking.”

Cathy hated that feeling of always second-guessing and not knowing if she might say the wrong thing.
She didn’t like how great moments often turned awkward or embarrassing.

With one simple shift in her brain, everything changed. She started closing more sales calls, got more referrals, and most importantly, stopped stressing about whether she was saying the right thing.

Thinking Skills

While you are doing any task, you (without even realizing it!) are using your 28 thinking skills.

When the thinking skills you need to use are strong, doing the task happens easily.
If the thinking skill you need to use is weak, doing the task will be a challenge.

The struggle that Cathy had, came from a weak thinking skill of considering another perspective.

Considering Another Perspective

Considering another person’s perspective is exactly what it sounds like:
Can you truly see things from their point of view?

It’s a skill we’ve been told to use since we were kids, but here’s what I’ve noticed -
Most people still struggle to fully understand it, let alone apply it in a way that actually helps them in real-life situations.

Different Ways to Understand Another Person's Perspective

Everyone’s brain works a little differently, and sometimes, all it takes is hearing something in a slightly different way for it to finally click.

So I’m going to give you 3 different ways to strengthen your ability to consider another person’s perspective.
Try them out and see which one works best for you:

1) Whenever someone else is talking, put your movie on pause and play their movie.
You will be able to come back to your movie, but for now play their movie so you can understand their perspective.

2) You are the main character in the movie of your life, but it doesn’t mean you’re the main character in every scene.
So whenever speaking to another person, ask yourself, What is my role in this scene?
This helps your brain zoom out and see how the other person fits into the bigger picture and how you can better understand them.

3) Imagine life as a bus, and you're usually in the driver's seat. But what happens if, just for a moment, you slide over into someone else's seat? Do you now see the ocean instead of the houses? Or maybe here you see 6 more lanes of cars?
With this perspective, you can have an easier time responding in way that will move the whole bus forward, not just you.

Your Challenge

Considering another person’s perspective is easy to understand but can be challenging to do.

Your job this week is to consider other people’s perspectives in a way that works with your brain.
Let’s see what happens when you see the world from their point of view!

Also, if you have another way of considering other people’s perspectives, I want to hear it!
