Cognitive Functions Assessment for Entrepreneurs (1).gif

3 Skills Every Entrepreneur Needs

CUSTOM JAVASCRIPT / HTML

Resilience, grit, discipline, leadership, there are some skills every entrepreneur needs.
But what about thinking skills?
Which one of the cognitive functions will help an entrepreneur build their business?

Cognitive Functions

Thinking is not one big thing.
Rather, it's made up of 28 thinking skills, called cognitive functions.

Honestly, the stronger your cognitive functions are in general, the easier it is to solve the problem.

But personally, I think these 3 cognitive functions, these 3 thinking skills will have a MASSIVE effect on your business and without them, I find it hard to see you keep moving forward.

1. Defining The Problem

You need to be able to get clear on what the problem is EXACTLY.
Not the customers aren’t happy.
What part are they not happy about?
Customer service isn’t clear enough either.
The fact phones don’t get answered?
The receptionist doesn’t know how to answer people’s questions. What is the actual problem?

You can improve this by:

👉Taking time to define the problem.
Many times as entrepreneurs, we jump into an action mood trying to solve the problem.
But sometimes we end up wasting time solving the wrong problem
OR we solve the problem but only for immediately, for the short term. It would have taken just as much time to solve the actual problem and then it will be solved for the long term.

👉To actually define the problem, you’ll want to keep asking yourself “What caused this?” or “Why did this happen?”
Go deep. Every time you get an answer see if you can ask the question again.

For example: "Why is the launch failing?"
Because not enough people are buying.
“Why are people not buying?”
Because the price is too high.
“What causes people to think the price is too high?”
Because they don’t understand the benefit.
Why don’t they understand the benefit?
Because are messaging is to complex.

Obviously here I can make up whatever I want this moment, when you are defining a problem in real life, it can take a few minutes, sometimes hours or days to figure out what the real problem is.
But it will be so worth it.

Plus, the more you do it, the better you will get at this skill and the faster you’ll be able to define the problem.

2. Hypothetical Thinking

If...Then...
If this is true, then what else must be true?
If a lot of clients like version A, then they’ll probably like version B.
If we got a lot of requests for specific services, then it might be smart to add it as an option.
If a lot of clients aren’t finishing this course, then I should make some adjustments for people to stay engaged and complete it.

You can improve this by:

👉Start by using the sentence “If….Then…” more often.
This will begin training your brain to think hypothetically.

👉Once you defined your problem, turn your problem into a hypothetical question. “If I know my messaging is too complex, Then I need to rewrite it.

👉You can take it one step further by creating multiple If... Then... statements to the same problem. This will really get the wheels in your brain turning, especially that because you do a few, you don’t need a “right one” so your brain’s creative juices can flow.

If I know my messaging is too complex, then I need to hire a new writer.
If I know my messaging is too complex, then I need to find a simpler way to write it.
If I know my messaging is too complex, then maybe I need to explain it in pictures
If I know my messaging is too complex, then I may need to explain it better to myself as I don’t know how to say it simply (now that may be the even REALER problem:)

It’s important to note with hypothetical thinking you may not know for sure what will work.
Once we have our "If... Then..." statement we need to test it out with hypothetical testing.

3. Projecting Virtual Relationships

This is about being able to make connections that aren’t there.

My clients are telling me they have problem X, but I know their real problem is Y.

It can also be two problems are related even though it doesn’t look like it.

You can improve this by:

👉 Ask yourself, what else is this related to this?
What else is complex messaging related too?
Social media,
the way I explain my business,
the vibe of our office, our emails,
the colors in the ads etc.
It may not see obvious that complex messaging and colors in ads are related, but on deeper level they are - projecting virtual relationships.

👉You can also take random items in your house (or random ideas & thoughts you have) and ask yourself is there a relationship between them?

Bonus: Perseverance

There’s another cognitive function that I so strongly believe every entrepreneur needs, and that’s perseverance.
Honestly perseverance is probably a prerequisite to being an entrepreneur and I know so many of you are really good at it.

I also know you’re human and some days are hard.
On those days, remind yourself of the bigger picture, the bigger goal you are working on and flip the situation to see it as challenge, to see how far you can go - growth mindset!
