Boosting Your Resilience on the Entrepreneurial Rollercoaster

CUSTOM JAVASCRIPT / HTML

You know you’re resilient and it’s what has helped you on your entrepreneurial journey.

Yet, sometimes you feel like you’re so stuck on the bottom of this rollercoaster, that you just want to get off.

How can you build resilience so even when you get to the bottom, you make it through without having the feeling of wanting to get off?

28 Cognitive Functions

Thinking is made up of 28 parts called cognitive functions.
We use these cognitive functions to do almost every activity in business and life.

You might be struggling with perseverance if you’ve got a weak cognitive function of perseverance. (Yup! It's a cognitive function!)

I feel wrong saying that, as I KNOW you’ve got perseverance.
You have too.
It’s a prerequisite for being an entrepreneur.

The reason why I am saying it is because perseverance, like all of the 28 thinking skills, are on a spectrum.
There is no such thing as being “perfect” at perseverance.
You can always get better at it.
You are probably a lot better at it then most people, at the same time, I know if you get even better at it, it will make you’re life easier and you’ll be able to enjoy the entrepreneurial rollercoaster more.

How to Get Better at Perseverance

Here 7 Ways to Get Better at Perseverance:

  • You KNOW I’m going to start with a growth mindset. Everything starts with a growth mindset, especially perseverance. You want to always be learning and always be taking on new challenges. You don’t want to be afraid of failure as you know it’s part of the learning experience. Episodes 352 & 360 goes into depth on this.
  • Have a go-to activity to do whenever you are stressed. For some people that’s eating a tube of ice cream. You want to one that will actually help you. Go for run, call a specific friend, run a hot bath. This will help you calm down and figure out what your next step should be. If you make it the same activity every time, you’ll be creating a trigger that works in your favor.
  • Approach the problem logically instead of emotionally. So many times, we get caught up in who’s wrong, who caused it, it’s not fair, plans changed, it wasn’t meant to go that way etc. that we can’t think of a solution and help ourselves. The amygdala starts taking control, we literally can’t think. By looking at the facts, we can come up with a solution we haven’t thought of before.
  • Take action. When disaster strikes, some people want to retreat. You’ve got to start taking action, even small action to help you move forward. You know how they say when you’re in a car accident you want to start driving immediately afterwards so your fear doesn’t grow any bigger than it is, same in business. You want to take action immediately. Plus, you’ll be solving the problem and helping your business
  • Practice gratitude. When you develop a mindset of gratitude, your brain is always looking out for the good - even in the hardest times. This is what will help get you through.
  • Look at the whole picture. Many times, we get caught up in the problem right now. Yes, you lost all your client data, but now you have systems, methods better ways of getting the information, you are not starting from scratch. And the other way too, in 10 years you’ll be able to say, this was the point that you focused on the clients that love your most and are your raving fans.
  • (My favorite!) Whenever you have done something successfully, take a moment to figure out what strategy has helped you figure it out. What was the specific thing that helped you here? Get clear on it and give it a name, then add it to a running list of strategies. Next time you are in a challenging situation, open up your list and find a strategy you can use here.
