Building Intrinsic Motivation: How to Improve Employee Morale and Productivity in Unpopular Tasks

Real Life Challenge

Do you have an employee who lacks motivation?
No matter how many incentives or bonuses you try, this employee is not interested in the work and just the bare minimum to get by.

28 Thinking Skills

With 28 thinking skills we use to do every task, there is a high possibility that the tasks your employee doesn't want to do is because one of their thinking skills are weak, making it extremely difficult for this employee to do the task.

That’s actually NOT what we’re gonna talk about today. We’re gonna tactile it from a different perspective. - Mediation.

Mediation

Mediation is the process of asking someone questions to help them come to the conclusion themselves.
We spoke about mediation in a few episodes including 354 & 398, but I don’t think I’ve shared with you there are 12 angles to which you can approach mediation.

Today we’re gonna talk about how to use mediation to build intrinsic motivation - one of the twelve angles.

What is Intrinsic Motivation?

Intrinsic motivation is motivation that comes from within.
Not bonuses, complements or trying to please another person. A motivation that comes from inside of you.

You want to help your employees have motivation from within them, to want to do the task, to be proud of their work and the effort they put in it.

Now remember, mediation is not about teaching or putting information on someone. It’s about going to where they are and helping them see the opportunity and possibility of what can be.

Once they see the possibility, if they’d like, you help them get to where they want to go.

So, you are going to want to help them in a way of asking questions or gentle conversation.

6 Ways to Build Intrinsic Motivation in Your Employees

Here are 6 Ways to help build intrinsic motivation in your employees.
Be smart about this and apply it to yourself too!!

  • Connect the task to a bigger picture. They may not like entering boring data, but if they understand it will help them when they deal with clients or close deals, they’re more likely to want to do.
  • The next one is going to be especially helpful if you thought “it’s just to help the business in general” you’ll want to connect it to your business mission. WHY are you running this business? I have a feeling it’s more than just money. Do your employees know what that mission is? Is it personal to them? Help them make that personal connection.
  • Give compliments on process, not outcomes. This will help your employees appreciate their own hard effort and will want to do it more - plus it's the growth mindset way!
  • Let employees do work they are responsible for in the way they want. Show them they are actually responsible by not micromanaging them and have them report to you when it’s done. As long as it was done in a way that works, even if it’s not your way, it’s okay.
  • Celebrate the business successes together. Whether it’s a big launch or busy season, take the time to celebrate together.
  • People want challenges but not too challenging. If the task is boring, see how you can add in an element of challenge or fun. If the task is too challenging, see who can help them make it a little easier.

Which brings me back to the point I said in the beginning.
If an employee has a weak cognitive function, it’s going to be very challenging for them to have intrinsic motivation. See if you can identity what weak cognitive function is getting in the way of that task and how you can help them improve it.
